PORTLAND RAIN TIE BOISE 0-0 knotted after 90 minutes, Rain Still Unbeaten
Portland, Ore. (May 19, 2009)
The Portland Rain put the pressure on for 90 minutes, but missed a couple close chances and were unable to get a goal across, ending the game in a 0-0 tie with the Boise Blitz on Monday night.
The Rain dominated possession and kept the ball in Boise’s half of the field for most of the first half. Early in the game, midfielder Natalie Budge was fouled in the box and awarded a penalty kick, but couldn’t sneak one past Boise keeper Liz Ruiz diving to her right. Forwards Nicole Wilcox and Ali Williams each threatened twice, but Ruiz was able to defend and keep the Rain attack scoreless.
Budge split the defense a few more times herself, but the Rain couldn’t quite break through. Boise had a few opportunities in the second half, but Rain goalie Ashley Wood made strong saves to keep the score tied, which is how it would end on Monday night.
“Last night’s game definitely wasn’t the prettiest, and I think it was difficult for either team to get into a rhythm,” said head coach Stan Rodrigues. “We had plenty of chances but just couldn’t capitalize. The positives are that the second half was much better. We had more energy, but just couldn’t put one away.”
The game moves the Rain to 2-0-1 in the preseason. Goalies Georgie Christensen, Jess Kuehlwein and Ashley Wood have combined to shut out opponents in these first three games.
The Rain continue preseason play this Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Hillsboro Stadium, when they take on the Westside Metros Galaxy in a friendly, which will feature a number of Rain players taking on their former club. Tickets are on sale at www.portlandrainfc.com or by calling 503-764-2396. Fans can also get their tickets at Aries Apparel, an official ticket outlet of the Portland Rain, located just off Cornell Road in Hillsboro.
